Skid Steer Attachments: Are They Universal?

Skid steers, also called skid loaders, are machines that make work easier and reduce the need for manual labor. Many call these machines Bobcats because Bobcat is one of the most popular skid steer manufacturers.

The machine derives its name from the movement it makes when changing direction. The wheels do not turn like those of a typical vehicle. They skid to change the direction of movement of the machine.

Manufacturers make skid steers to work with multiple attachments. Most people are curious to understand whether these attachments are universal industrial equipment parts. Read on to find out below.

Are Skid Loader Attachments Universal?

Most skid loader attachments are universal, but not all. There are different types of skid steers, each with varying capabilities and capacities.

For this reason, a skid steer may work well with some attachments, while others may be difficult to handle because they surpass the machine's capability. Using industrial equipment parts that are not compatible with your skid steer may be dangerous, and it may not be able to deliver optimal productivity.

The hydraulic flow capacity of a skid steer largely determines how compatible a skid steer is with an attachment. Hydraulic flow measures the amount of hydraulic fluid flowing through the hoses that link a skid steer to an attachment. The hydraulic flow is measured in gallons per minute.

A skid steer can either have high-flow or low-flow capacity. High-flow capacity falls between 30 and 45 gallons per minute, while low-flow capacity falls between 18 and 25 gallons per minute.

Heavy-duty industrial equipment in South Florida, like breakers and grinders, pair well with high-flow skid steers. A low-flow skid steer pairs well with light-duty attachments, such as a spreader or a bucket.

The advantage of high-flow skid steers is that they can couple with heavy-duty and light-duty attachments. However, they are more expensive compared to their low-flow counterparts.

How to Change Skid Steer Attachments

Skid steers typically have a universal platform to accommodate different types of attachments. You can easily mount your attachment by following these steps:

• Ensure you are in a safe and flat environment with enough space.

• Confirm the quick-attach plates, attachments, and skid loader are clean.

• Drive the skid steer slowly towards the attachment and lock levers or pins into the device.

• Verify the pins have gone through both openings on either side of the quick-attach plate.

• Link the hoses from your attachment to the skid loader. Push them together to connect them successfully until you hear a click sound. Give the hoses a quick tug to confirm whether they are secure.

• Turn on the auxiliary hydraulics. At first, operate the hydraulics at low and idle speeds to spot any hydraulic leaks on the attachment or skid steer. If there are no leaks, you can now use a faster speed.

• If you want to disconnect the attachment, push the hoses toward the skid loader to relieve pressure. You can then disengage the hoses.

• Unlock the levers or lift pins upwards out of the quick-attach plate holes and drive back slowly.
