Shoulder Injections: Relieving Pain and Restoring Mobility

At the Spine and Joint Center in Fort Lauderdale, we understand how debilitating shoulder pain can be. Whether your shoulder pain is caused by arthritis, tendonitis, or a sports-related injury, shoulder injections can provide relief and restore mobility.

What are Shoulder Injections?

Shoulder injections are a type of medication administered directly into the shoulder joint or surrounding soft tissues. The injection can contain corticosteroids, anesthetics, or other medications that help reduce inflammation and pain. Shoulder injections are typically recommended when other treatments, such as physical therapy and medications, have not produced the desired results.

What Conditions Can Be Treated with Shoulder Injections?

Shoulder injections can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Rotator cuff tendonitis
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Shoulder instability
  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)

What Are the Benefits of Shoulder Injections?

Shoulder injections offer a number of benefits, such as:

  • Relief from pain and inflammation: They deliver anti-inflammatory medications directly to the affected area, reducing inflammation and alleviating pain.
  • Increased range of motion: As discomfort diminishes, patients often experience an enhanced range of motion and greater ease in performing daily activities.
  • Improved muscle strength: Patients can engage more effectively in physical therapy and exercises, which can lead to improved muscle strength and function around the shoulder joint.
  • Decreased need for pain medications: Injections directly target the source of pain and inflammation, often providing immediate and lasting relief. As a result, patients may require fewer oral pain medications.

How Are Shoulder Injections Performed?

Shoulder injections are performed in our office and typically take about 30 minutes. During the procedure, the patient is placed in a comfortable position and the area is cleansed. The injection is then given using a very thin needle.

What Happens After the Injection?

After the injection, the patient may experience some soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site. Ice and/or over-the-counter pain medications may be used to help reduce any discomfort.

The patient may also be instructed to perform certain exercises to help strengthen the shoulder muscles and restore range of motion.

Are There Any Risks Associated with Shoulder Injections?

Shoulder injections are considered safe when performed by a trained professional. However, there are some risks associated with the procedure, such as infection and bleeding.
